Universal Works

since 2008 : A modern story of workwear and authenticity

Universal Works was founded in Nottingham in 2008 by David Keyte, a former designer at Paul Smith, and Stephanie Porritt. What started at Keyte’s own kitchen table, with little more than a handful of patterns and a clear purpose, has since grown into one of Britain’s most respected independent menswear labels.

Keyte’s upbringing in a 1970s Midlands working-class family shaped the foundation of the brand. Weekdays meant durable workwear, weekends brought sharp leisurewear, and that contrast of utility and refinement became Universal Works’ DNA. Before striking out on his own, Keyte refined his skills at Paul Smith, Maharishi, and other leading houses, gaining both the technical know-how and confidence to build a label grounded in authenticity rather than hype.

Honest Clothing for Everyday Life

At its core, Universal Works blends British heritage with contemporary design. The label takes familiar workwear and military silhouettes and reimagines them for modern wardrobes: understated, versatile, and quietly refined.

Best known for its work jackets, overshirts, utility trousers, and knitwear, Universal Works has grown from Nottingham roots to standalone stores in London and Nottingham, while building a strong network of international partners.

The Collection

Universal Works provides a comprehensive wardrobe that strikes a balance between utility and comfort. Think rugged jackets, military-inspired outerwear, utility overshirts, relaxed chinos, and drawstring trousers, alongside soft knitwear and easy suiting that marries tailoring with ease.

Accessories and footwear add depth, highlighted by collaborations with Saucony, Yogi, and Flower Mountain. What sets these pieces apart is material integrity: organic “Future Friendship” denim, upcycled tweeds, and surplus fabrics that minimize waste. Built to last, the clothing is designed to layer well, age gracefully, and fit seamlessly into everyday life.

A Philosophy of Realness

The brand’s ethos is refreshingly simple: to create genuine, honest clothing that seamlessly fuses heritage with today’s lifestyle. Universal Works thrives on its independence, steering clear of hype cycles in favor of timeless function. Small-batch, ethical production is central, always “made in the right places, with people we trust.” The ReWorks repair service extends the life of garments, while collaborations with artists, cultural groups, and brands reinforce a sense of community that goes beyond fashion.

Defining Moments

Universal Works has built its reputation through thoughtful collaborations and cultural recognition. Partnerships with Saucony, Yogi, Flower Mountain, and master-piece have brought fresh dimensions to their workwear roots, while their tie-in with Progress Running Club merges fashion with grassroots sport.

The 10th anniversary in 2019 was celebrated with special drops for early stockists, including Peggs & Son and Oi Polloi. In 2023, the brand opened a flagship store on Nottingham’s Derby Road. Regularly featured in GQ, Monocle, and Highsnobiety, Universal Works continues to earn praise for its fabrics, fits, and understated authenticity. Yet challenges remain, with sustainability watchdogs calling for greater transparency across its supply chain.
