Smithey Ironware

since 2015 : Reviving the Heirloom Skillet for the Modern Kitchen

The Backstory: From Vintage Spark to Modern Revival

The origins of Smithey Ironware Company trace back to 2015, when founder Isaac Morton inherited a smooth vintage Griswold skillet that revealed to him the beauty of heirloom cast iron. In his backyard workshop in North Charleston, South Carolina, Morton began restoring old pans as a personal hobby, gifting them to friends and family. That passion quickly evolved into a vision: why not create new cookware that carried the elegance of vintage pieces, but benefitted from modern design and manufacturing techniques? With that idea, Smithey was born.

Craftsmanship and Production Philosophy

Every Smithey piece is designed and crafted in the United States, produced at the brand’s facilities in Charleston, including a workshop set in a former Navy Yard. Each pan undergoes multiple rounds of inspection and finishing, ensuring its signature smooth interior and elegant detailing meet exacting standards. A lifetime guarantee underscores the brand’s commitment to durability, positioning each skillet or Dutch oven as a legacy object, intended to be used, cherished, and passed down for generations.

Product Excellence: Cast Iron and Carbon Steel Refined

Smithey’s cast iron line elevates tradition with a satin-smooth finish, making it both naturally nonstick and easy to clean. Dual handles with hanging holes, refined pour spouts, and elegantly angled walls reflect thoughtful design without sacrificing function. Standouts include the No. 12 Skillet, No. 14 Dual-Handle Skillet, the 7.25-quart Dutch Oven, and a versatile flat-top griddle, each earning loyal followings and rave reviews.

In 2018, Smithey introduced the Farmhouse Collection, a carbon steel line developed with Charleston blacksmith Robert Thomas. Lighter, faster-heating, and visually distinctive, these handcrafted pans quickly became icons in their own right. The 12-inch Farmhouse Skillet, originally a limited run, is now a core bestseller, while newer additions such as the hand-forged carbon steel wok showcase both performance and artistry. Each carbon steel piece carries its own unique forging marks, celebrating individuality within uniform excellence.

Community, Culinary Culture, and Brand Ethos

At its heart, Smithey is more than a cookware brand, it’s a steward of culinary heritage. Each piece is envisioned as a functional heirloom, designed to carry the patina of shared meals and family traditions. Founder Isaac Morton encourages owners to keep their skillets in use and on display, as objects of both function and beauty. Acclaimed chefs like Sean Brock and Hugh Acheson have embraced Smithey, integrating its pans into professional kitchens and home rituals alike. The brand’s presence in Southern culinary circles and beyond reinforces its place as both a cultural artifact and a modern kitchen essential.
