Montana
since 1982 : Danish Design with Environmental Depth
Montana Furniture stands as one of the few European furniture brands that keeps its entire production process in-house. From painting and lacquering to assembly and quality control, everything happens at their factory in Funen, Denmark, where more than 160 skilled employees oversee each stage. This localised model ensures full traceability, close oversight, and consistently high standards, while also allowing the company to implement sustainable practices across the entire value chain.
Materials and Finishing Quality
Montana’s furniture is built primarily from 12 mm medium-density fibreboard (MDF) sourced from PEFC-certified forests. This material provides their pieces with structural stability while allowing for ultra-precise edges and seamless modular construction.
The panels are finished in water-based primers and solvent-free lacquers, eliminating harmful VOCs. Each edge is rounded on the front and rear for comfort, yet kept straight at the ends, allowing panels to align perfectly when combined. This detail-driven approach shows in products like the Montana Furniture TOP139 top panel and the Montana Furniture Shelf 1321, where precision alignment and clean finishing are crucial.
Montana offers 41 colour finishes, created in collaboration with colourist Margrethe Odgaard and refreshed approximately every eight years. This extensive palette allows complete aesthetic customisation while maintaining consistency across modules, handles, panels, and shelving.
Modular System Design and Durability
Montana’s signature is its modular furniture system. The brand offers 36 base modules in four depths, which can be combined into shelving walls, cabinets, or storage systems. Modules are available in various configurations, including open shelves, door-front compartments, drawers, and mixed layouts, such as the versatile Montana Furniture Shelf 1223, which features drawers and open cubbies.
Each unit comes with a 10-year guarantee (five years on chairs, basin units, or hydraulic/electronic parts). The design ethos encourages reconfiguring and reusing modules rather than replacing them, extending the furniture’s lifespan and reducing waste. Customers can update the look by simply rearranging or recolouring modules rather than discarding them.
Production, Operations, and Sustainability in Practice
All painting, lacquering, cutting, and assembly occur at the Funen facility, which combines advanced machinery for precision with skilled craftsmanship for finishing details. The factory has switched to district heating to reduce carbon emissions and continues to operate with water-based finishes and strict oversight of emissions.
Montana also maintains early and ongoing environmental accounting and performs regular audits on environmental, indoor climate, and quality performance. This tightly integrated operation enables Montana to quickly adopt new sustainability improvements without increasing supply chain complexity.
