MINUS-8
since 2013 : West Coast Design Meets Watchmaking Grit
Born in San Francisco around 2013, MINUS-8 was created by Astro Studios, the industrial design powerhouse behind projects such as the Xbox and Nike FuelBand. The name comes from the West Coast’s UTC-8 time zone, and the brand fully embraces that origin story: rooted in tech, architecture, and bold industrial design. From the start, MINUS-8 positioned itself as an antidote to generic watches, aiming to create pieces that are both visually striking and mechanically reliable.
Design Philosophy and Approach
MINUS-8 watches are defined by their architectural design language. The brand focuses on originality rather than reinterpreting vintage styles, building watches with layered cases, crisp geometry, and colour transitions that emphasize structure. They produce in small batches to maintain quality and minimize waste, and they view each model as a long-term investment rather than a trend-driven piece. Premium materials are central to their ethos, with titanium, 316L stainless steel, and sapphire crystal used across models to bring both durability and refinement. The brand strives to strike a balance between bold design and utility, positioning its watches as both dependable tools and stylish statements.
Key Models and Technical Highlights
Diver 2.0 is their flagship dive watch, built from titanium with a PVD finish, 300 m water resistance, and a Seiko NH35 automatic movement. It includes a helium release valve, a screw-down crown at 4 o’clock, and a sapphire crystal, offering serious dive-ready performance in a distinctive industrial package.
Diver 1T Solar takes a more accessible route, utilizing a Seiko Epson solar movement and offering 200m water resistance, while retaining its titanium construction and strong lume. It is lower-maintenance and ideal for daily wear or travel.
Layer and Layer 2.0 are their design showpieces, featuring multiple stacked rings in the case, which create striking colour and finish transitions. Many run on NH35 automatic movements and feature sapphire crystals.
Field 1S represents their simpler, everyday offering, featuring clean dials, 316L stainless steel cases, and versatile styling, designed to be durable without the bulk of their dive or layered models.
Across these models, sizes run large (often 42–45 mm and around 14 mm thick), making them unapologetically bold on the wrist.
Craft, Manufacturing, and Practices
MINUS-8 sources movements from trusted Japanese makers, such as Seiko and Epson. Cases are made from titanium or steel with PVD finishing, and all models feature a sapphire crystal. Production runs are deliberately small to ensure quality control and avoid overproduction. Each watch comes with a two-year warranty, and the brand maintains an open, community-driven relationship with its customers through blogs and storytelling.
why MINUS-8
MINUS-8 stands out as one of the few design-led watch brands offering serious specs at accessible prices, often under or around US$500. The build quality, materials, and distinctive architecture appeal to those who value uniqueness and industrial aesthetics over traditional heritage cues. Their solar models add convenience, while the automatic divers offer tool-level performance at relatively fair prices.
However, their bold size and thickness can overwhelm smaller wrists, and some users report that bezel or crown action could be smoother. PVD finishes can show wear over time, and their avant-garde look may be polarizing for those who prefer discreet styling or classic Swiss designs.
