Kasthall

since 1889 : Swedish Craft and Conscious Luxury Underfoot

Founded in 1889 and still producing from its original site in Kinna, southern Sweden, Kasthall has grown into one of the world's most respected rug makers by fusing heritage craftsmanship with forward-thinking sustainability. The company has a formal sustainability program built on clear pillars and measurable targets, integrating environmental and social responsibility into every stage of its production.

Kasthall's strategy centers on six key priorities. Durable luxury sits at the center, with rugs designed to last for decades through robust construction and the use of high-quality natural materials. The brand promotes conscious consumption by offering customers complete transparency about fibers, dyes, and production impacts. Caring for people means ensuring safe and inclusive working conditions not only for Kasthall's employees but also across their entire supply chain. They emphasize the preservation of natural resources by using primarily wool and linen, reducing water and chemical usage, and minimizing waste. Through good governance, they ensure that their policies, reporting, and decision-making align with their stated values.

Specific practices reflect this ethos. Many rugs are made to order to prevent overproduction. The brand carefully plans yarn usage to minimize leftover spools, and it has set goals to reduce combustible waste. Yarn preparation and dyeing processes are engineered for both colorfastness and environmental efficiency. This commitment is reflected in their published Sustainability Report, which outlines targets, progress, and metrics annually.

Craftsmanship and Material Mastery

Kasthall's approach combines traditional Swedish textile techniques with controlled, modern production methods to ensure quality, performance, and sustainability. All design, weaving, tufting, and finishing take place in their Kinna factory, where designers collaborate closely with technical developers. Fibers are rigorously tested for durability, color stability, and their aging properties under light, pressure, and wear.

They work in two main techniques: woven rugs, which are flatter, more structured, and renowned for their longevity; and tufted rugs, which offer a richer, plush texture. Some collections also use Kasthall's LOOP technology and three-dimensional tufting to create sculptural surface effects and varied pile heights. Wool and linen are the principal fibers, chosen for their strength and natural beauty. Linen adds sheen and crisp texture, while wool contributes softness, warmth, and resilience.

Backing materials, adhesives, and finishes are selected to minimize chemical footprint while maintaining performance standards. Yarn dyeing is handled in-house with careful control to achieve deep, lasting colour while limiting water and chemical use. Every detail, from fiber length to pile density, is engineered to maximize durability and longevity.

Longevity and Maintenance Philosophy

Kasthall views longevity as a key aspect of sustainability. Their rugs are built to endure years of use and designed to age gracefully rather than wear out. They advise spot cleaning, airing, and careful vacuuming instead of machine washing or dry cleaning, as these methods can damage fibers. Hand-tufted rugs may experience slight shrinkage of around 3–5 percent, which is accounted for in design specifications.

This balance of tactile comfort, acoustic performance, and lasting structural integrity aligns with Kasthall's belief that rugs should be not only beautiful but also a pleasure to walk on.

Recent Collections and Creative Directions

Kasthall continues to evolve creatively while drawing on its extensive archives. The Anemon collection (2025) revived a 1991 aquarelle by Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg with new colourways, including Blue, Lilac, and Coral, showcasing how heritage design can be revitalized for modern interiors. The Fasad collection (2025) similarly incorporates sustainable yarn choices and references social responsibility in its development notes.

They have also opened a concept store in Stockholm, located at Ingmar Bergman's Gata 4, created in collaboration with textile brand Astrid. The store is designed as a dynamic design hub rather than a static showroom, fostering dialogue within the design community.

Heritage and Design Philosophy

With over 135 years of continuous operation, Kasthall embodies Swedish design heritage anchored in craft. The late Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg significantly influenced the Kasthall aesthetic, characterized by bold yet timeless patterns, harmonious colors, and meticulous detail.

Their philosophy is rooted in the belief that a rug is not just decorative. It must be visually compelling, tactilely comforting, acoustically softening, and structurally enduring. This holistic approach has enabled Kasthall to remain a benchmark in the luxury flooring industry.
