Carl Hansen & Søn

since 1908 : Danish Modern Heritage

Carl Hansen & Søn was founded on October 28, 1908, in Odense, Denmark, by Carl Hansen, initially producing bedroom furniture and bespoke pieces for local clients. The company grew steadily through the early 20th century but found its defining voice in the mid-century era, when it began collaborating with leading designers such as Hans J. Wegner, Børge Mogensen, Kaare Klint, Arne Jacobsen, and Ole Wanscher. These partnerships positioned the brand at the heart of what came to be known as Danish Modern design. Despite economic challenges over the years, Carl Hansen & Søn maintained its focus on craftsmanship and heritage. Today, it remains family-owned under Knud Erik Hansen, the founder’s grandson, ensuring continuity of values and legacy.

Design Philosophy & Identity

Carl Hansen & Søn embodies the Danish Modern ethos: clean lines, functional design, honest use of natural materials, and minimal ornamentation. The furniture balances sculptural beauty with comfort and practicality, making pieces that are as timeless as they are functional. While the company continues to produce classic icons, it also collaborates with contemporary designers to expand the range, always guided by respect for tradition and innovation in equal measure.

Craftsmanship & Materials

The brand’s workshop is based in Gelsted on the island of Funen, where skilled joiners and carpenters produce many of the pieces by hand.

Materials

FSC-certified solid woods such as oak, walnut, and teak, combined with natural finishes, oils, and high-quality upholstery.

Techniques

Complex joinery, steam bending, and traditional hand-weaving, particularly for chair seats and other furniture pieces.

Production Quality

Extremely high standards, tolerances, and finishes are carefully controlled. Most indoor furniture comes with a 5-year warranty, reflecting confidence in durability.

Iconic Designs

Carl Hansen & Søn is most famous for its chairs, particularly those designed by Hans J. Wegner:

CH24 Wishbone Chair (1949)

A global design icon, still in continuous production, instantly recognized for its sculptural Y-shaped back and hand-woven seat.

CH07 Shell Chair

A bold three-legged design with a curved, floating seat shell that embodies functional elegance.

FH419 Heritage Chair (Frits Henningsen)

A more classical upholstered piece, showcasing the company’s mastery of traditional craft.

Beyond these, the collection includes lounge chairs, dining tables, benches, and newer designs that extend the brand’s legacy into the 21st century.
