since 2000 : Redefining New Scandinavian Design

Founded in Denmark in 2000, Bolia has its headquarters in Aarhus inside a former train repair workshop dating back to 1862. This historic building now serves both as the brand’s flagship store and as a creative hub—a living symbol of how heritage and modern design can coexist. From the outset, Bolia’s mission has been clear: to evolve Scandinavian design, enriching its minimalist DNA with global creativity, warmth, and sensory appeal.

The Philosophy of New Scandinavian Design

Bolia defines its ethos as New Scandinavian Design. While rooted in Nordic minimalism, it expands the language of design by collaborating with more than 50 designers from 19 countries. This cultural diversity brings fresh perspectives to clean, functional forms, ensuring that Bolia’s creations feel familiar yet forward-looking. The result is a design philosophy that both honors tradition and reimagines its possibilities.

Craftsmanship, Customization & Sustainability

Bolia emphasizes craft, care, and responsibility at every stage. Most products are made to order in Europe, reducing waste and celebrating craftsmanship. FSC-certified wood, OEKO-TEX® textiles, traceable leathers, and ecolabelled components underscore a strong commitment to sustainable sourcing. Rugs are Care & Fair–certified, and chairs incorporate recycled polypropylene, while sofas are designed with washable, replaceable covers to extend their lifespan. Every piece comes with a 10-year warranty, reinforcing a dedication to durability and timelessness.

Product Ecosystem & Design Process

The brand’s product universe spans sofas, lighting, tables, storage, accessories, and outdoor living. Collections are released twice a year, with each piece taking up to 18 months from concept to completion. A Creative Committee guides this process, curating briefs and collaborating with international designers to infuse a global vision into Scandinavian forms. The Bolia Design Awards, held annually, spotlight emerging talent, with winning designs integrated into collections—turning new ideas into enduring products.

Retail Experience & Global Presence

Bolia’s Aarhus flagship embodies the brand’s immersive spirit. Inside the restored railway building, design blends with hospitality—visitors can browse furniture while enjoying La Cabra coffee, making the space feel like both a gallery and a sanctuary. Beyond Aarhus, Bolia operates nearly 100 concept stores across Europe, Australia, and Singapore, complemented by a strong online presence and over 500 dealer partners in more than 50 countries. Participation in global design events such as 3 Days of Design further amplifies Bolia’s role as a cultural storyteller.

Cultural Footprint & Brand Values

Bolia’s ethos weaves together design, sustainability, and sensory living. Since its transformation from a tech company into a design house in 2005, the brand has maintained a spirit of agility while deepening its focus on slow living and mindful consumption. Its annual design journal, certified by both FSC and the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, reflects this thoughtful approach to storytelling.

Through workshops, curated playlists, and multi-sensory retail experiences, Bolia invites customers into a world that feels both inspiring and restorative. The brand’s spaces and products are designed not just to furnish homes but to create sanctuaries—places where calm, creativity, and connection can thrive.
