Bathing Culture
since 2016 : A Radical Return to Ritual
On Earth Day 2016, childhood friends Spencer Arnold and Tim Hollinger launched Bathing Culture in San Francisco, determined to create soaps that reflected their active, nature-rooted lives. Frustrated with harsh, plastic-heavy body washes, they set out to design a cleaner, kinder alternative. In the early days, they delivered their now-iconic Mind & Body Wash by bicycle, an eco-minded hustle that forged a direct connection with their community.
about bathing culture
Bathing Culture is built on the idea of “radically natural bathing”, a movement that treats cleansing as both a personal ritual and an environmental act. Inspired by California’s forests, meadows, and ocean waves, their philosophy rejects guilt-driven sustainability. Instead, the brand celebrates bathing as a joyful, restorative experience—where caring for yourself and the planet feels equally liberating.
Products
Mind & Body Wash
Organic, biodegradable, ultra-concentrated, and multi-use, with three evocative scents—Cathedral Grove, Break Water, and Meadow Vision. Packaged in recyclable or refillable formats, a single 8-oz bottle lasts about 80 showers.
Mind & Body Bar
Handcrafted with aloe, chlorella, and botanicals for a gentle, skin-loving cleanse.
Beyond Wash
The collection extends into Heat Wave Body Oil, Kelp Forest Shampoo, Good Seed Conditioner, mineral bath salts, terracotta scrubbers, and even playful home accessories like the Cosmic Rainbow Towel. Every product fuses sensory delight with purpose, creating a universe of textures and scents designed to elevate the everyday.
why bathing culture
Sustainability isn’t an afterthought; it’s at the core. Bathing Culture bottles products in glass refills, PCR plastic, and compostable materials like Mohawk Renewal Straw packaging. Their commitment goes further: for every five gallons produced, a native tree or plant is planted, ensuring that each purchase contributes to ecological regeneration.
Brand Highlights
The media has taken notice. Glamour praised the brand’s velvety wash and refill model, while Forbes spotlighted its mood-boosting rituals. On the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, co-founder Hollinger spoke passionately about challenging beauty norms with zero-new-plastic, natural-first formulations. Bathing Culture isn’t just a brand, it’s a cultural conversation about how we can live, clean, and consume differently.
Bathing Culture is as much about community as it is about product. The brand first spread not through bottles, but through a “Love Is Rad” sticker, symbolizing shared values of nature, simplicity, and joy. Today, its products channel the spirit of forest bathing, coastal serenity, and meadow wanderings, turning daily routines into mindful rituals that honor both body and environment.
where to find
From its San Francisco roots, Bathing Culture now reaches eco-conscious consumers nationwide. Available direct-to-consumer online, at refill stations, and through clean beauty retailers like Credo Beauty and Beauty Heroes, the brand has become a beacon for those who seek self-care that resonates with both purpose and pleasure.
